Athletica Acquires Welsh and Fletcher
Obviously with the injury to Daniela, Athletica had little choice in the matter. They needed a forward...and they needed it now. With the addition of Welsh, I really believe Athletica can make a solid run for the playoffs despite its current standing in the league. Welsh is a player that I've been following since her freshman year at Penn State. The first time I saw her play (while visiting my former teammate and PSU goalie Emily Oleksiuk) I realized what a workhorse Welsh was. She may seem somewhat low-key on the field -- at times you don't even see the work she is doing off the ball--but when an opportunity presents itself in front of the net, you better believe Welsh will convert.
Now, Kendall Fletcher, on the other hand, will be a great contribution to Athletica's back line. Fine by me if she takes over for McNeill. Yes, if you can't tell I'm still bitter about McNeill's shenanigans from her last performance! In all seriousness, Fletcher is a talent that will gel well with this team and a player Coach Barcellos should be thrilled to have on his roster.
Overall, I'm happy with the trade because it gives me hope for the future of St. Louis. Welsh and Fletcher weren't getting any minutes with LA Sol. Now, they have an opportunity to shine.
Saint Louis Athletica faces FC Gold Pride tonight at Ralph Korte Stadium on the Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville campus. Follow the game on MatchTracker.
*(The conditional 2010 first-round draft pick becomes a 2010 second-round draft pick if Athletica fail to finish the season as one of the top five teams in the WPS.)

Wambach & McNeill Suspended
I've said before that I AM NOT a Wambach fan. I repeat...NOT a fan. I never have been and probably never will be. However, I do not, under any circumstance, think that Wambach deserved a suspension. Don't get me wrong, I agree that the tackle was reckless, careless, and straight up sloppy. In my eyes it was yellow card worthy (which she got) and had Daniela not have been injured on the play, it would've never been talked about again. And then you say, "but Daniela did get hurt, that's the point" Yes, unfortunately that was the 'result' of the play, but people shouldn't use the result to make the cause out to be more than what it really was.
Here's my other issue -- After reviewing the game footage, coaches notes, and other supporting documents, the WPS Disciplinary Committee ruled that no suspensions were warranted. Commissioner Antonucci disagreed, and overturned the Committee's decision! Don't get me wrong, Tonya Antonucci is a great leader who I really admire and her decision was made with the best of intentions. But, it begs the question, "Why even have a Disciplinary Committee?" I mean, if Commissioner Antonucci is going to make the final decision anyway, why not save time and have her just tell the Committee how she wants them to vote.
The two positive things that came out of this: McNeill got a taste of karma and Antonucci approached US Soccer regarding referee assignments! Hmm...I know one ref who won't be back!

Daniela Out Indefinitely
"Daniela will be out indefinitely," said team physician, Dr. Brophy. "She does have a significant knee injury. She faces a lengthy recovery and extensive treatment before she returns to play."
According to the report, Daniela's MRI confirms she injured two knee ligaments and also sustained a crack in her tibia. I may not have gone to medical school, but I've gone through my fair share of injuries (including a cracked tibia) and I'm tellin' you, she is out for the entire season. If she goes back too soon, she risks causing significant long-term damage to the leg.
Obviously this is a huge blow to St. Louis, who was already struggling offensively, but what's also interesting is the recent chatter on message boards and blogs --
People actually believe that the knee injury, caused by a dangerous tackle on Saturday from Washington's Abby Wambach, was actually an act of retaliation by Wambach for the rough play she fell victim to in the first half. I have never been a big fan of Wambach, but I don't believe she'd intentionally hurt a player. Luckily, we have it on tape so you can judge for yourself.
(The injury occurs at the 2min mark in the video)
Hope Solo Quote:
"I know Abby means well, I know she has a good heart and she would never want to see a player go down, but in the emotions of a game, it was right after the kickoff after they scored, there are too many emotions and she went in two-footed." - Washington Post
Abby Wambach Quote:
"She took a long touch so I charged and slid into it, slipped a little bit. She came in late, I came in late, I definitely think I deserved a yellow card, but I don't think it was malicious. I wasn't intending to try to take her out. I was going for the ball. That's not my game." -Washington Post
According to SoccerAmerica, the WPS disciplinary committee will consider whether action will be taken against Wambach.
What do you think?

St. Louis - Close, But No Cigar
However, here's why I'm bummed:
#1 - I predicted that Athletica was going to win and they didn't. I don't like to be wrong. Had they been playing someone other than Washington (aka the comeback kids), they would've had it in the bag!
#2 -Kia McNeill should have been ejected. I remember a game I played in high school. I was playing sweeper. An opponent caught me on my heels and flat out beat me. Embarrassed and frustrated I turned around, ran the player down, and knowing that I had no shot at the ball, I took her out from behind. It's been 10+ years and I still remember it like it was yesterday. I remember it because I knew it was dirty. It was a cheap shot on a girl who beat me fair and square. Kia McNeill is worse than that. She didn't even wait to get beat. Instead, she just took out players before they even got a chance to beat her. Not once, not twice, but three times. It was disappointing to watch. I love playing physical, but McNeill was displaying the traits of a NFL linebacker and though I may sound like a soccer mom with a 6-year old on the field, I was legitimately worried someone was going to get hurt.
# 3 - Hope Solo is NOT shaky. I may be biased because I do think she's the best keeper in women's soccer, but the recent criticism of her game has been a little harsh. And let's be fair, this is the first game most of us soccer fans actually got to see her play (since the Freedom has been hogging all the airtime...just kidding..kinda). Do I think it was Solo's best game? Not at all. But I've replayed tonight's goals a few thousand times and in the last 2 goals against, Athletica's defense (or lack there of) played a huge part in its downfall. The coverage on the 2nd goal was lax, at best. Sadly, I think it was Chalupa's mark that netted the goal. On the 3rd goal, Athletica's defense can be credited with the Freedom's assist. 'Nuff said.
#4 - If Daniela is seriously hurt (which I think she is), St. Louis can say goodbye to any chance at the title. Hey, I may be an Athletica fan, but I'm also a realist. (According to a post on the Washington Examiner, "Daniela lost consciousness at one point in the locker room due to the pain, leading to the appearance of a defibrillator, even though it apparently was not used. Daniela eventually was taken away from the facility in an ambulance for precautionary reasons.")
#5 - Kerri Hanks. Coming into this season I was expecting a superstar to step out on the field. I'm still waiting. I know you've got it in you!
Now for some positive notes on Athletica: YOU FINALLY SCORED!!! It would've been slighlty embarrassing to head into Week 7 scoreless. To top it off, those three goals pull Athletica ahead of Sky Blue in the standings! Hellllllo, 6th place! Also, I really saw something special out of defender Tina Ellertson - Straight up, she saved a goal solely with pure heart and hustle. Hope Solo let out the biggest sigh of relief after Ellertson saved her from a 1v1 situation in the first half -- So much so, that minutes later, Solo stated in her halftime interview, "Tina Ellertson inspires me. I am inspired by Tina Ellertson." (Haha it was so sincere, but it cracked me up because I think Solo was still in shock from Ellertson saving her butt.)

WPS Weekend Recap
The game started out pretty evenly fought, with St. Louis racking up 7 shots in the 1st half, LA 5. It was during the 2nd half when things really started to get exciting. In the 73rd minute, St. Louis defender Tina Ellertson, on a late slide tackle, took down Sol's Katie Larkin in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Aly Wagner took the kick for the Sol, but was denied by goalkeeper Hope Solo. (Hello, of course it was denied. Solo is the best keeper in the world. Sorry Jonsson fans!)
St. Louis continued to dominate, outshooting the Sol 10-3 in the 2nd half. In the 83rd minute, St. Louis had a chance to secure a win when Sol defender Allison Falk committed a handball in the box. Athletica midfielder Lori Chalupny took the penalty, but shot right down the middle and into the hands of LA keeper Karina LeBlanc. I mean if you have a free shot on goal, why not shoot right at the goalie? No disrespect to Chaloopa, I'm just frustrated that they remain scoreless after 3 games.
It's like a broken record with Athletica. They seem to outplay their opponents, yet can't find the net. I'd like to give my opinion on what's going on with the team, but I have yet to see them play. Luckily St. Louis will be on FSC next Sunday when they take on Washington (a team who, by the way, has been on Fox Soccer Channel 3 of the 5 weeks! What's up with that?)
Coming into the game, the Boston Breakers were ranked 2nd in the league. They also had the league's co-scoring leader in Kelly Smith. It was going to be a hard-fought game -- or so we thought. In the 21st minute Carli Lloyd opened up scoring for Chicago off a set piece from 25 yards out. (That's right, to all those critics who gave Lloyd a hard time, step off. She is back!) Then 20 minutes later, Chicago's Brittany Klein found Megan Rapinoe running into the box. Rapinoe received the ball, cut to her left and shot the ball into the upper left corner of the net. GOOOOAL! Three minutes later, teammate Karen Carney mimicked Rapinoe's shot, almost to a tee, and tallied the 3rd goal for the Red Stars. At halftime they broke out in song..."Anything you can do, I can do better..." (Ok, not really, but it's a fun mental image, no?)
When the 2nd half started, all were suprised to see that Smith was not in the game for the Breakers. Apparently Coach DiCicco didn't want to risk an injury to Smith if the game was that far gone for his team. In the 51st minute, Brittany Klein sealed the deal for the Red Stars by putting one in the back of the net. 4 goals against and no Smith -- it's a wrap for Boston.
The Red Stars were phenomenal. Coach Hayes has been trying all season to dominate in the final third and Saturday night they finally did it. Her team was aggressive in the attack, but also strong on defense allowing no goals against. LA watch out...Chicago is nippin' at your heals for that #1 spot.

WPS Teams, Follow the Stars
The Chicago Red Stars have announced that two of its games this season will be broadcast live on the team’s website, http://www.chicagoredstars.com/!!
The broadcast schedule kicks off this Saturday as the Red Stars host the Boston Breakers. A 2nd webcast will be available for Chicago’s home game against the Washington Freedom, July 26th.
During preseason, I discussed with many friends and colleagues how impressed I was with Chicago's front office. They really have got it together. CEO Peter Wilt is leading the way when it comes to marketing in this league. His team of soliders (Marcia McDermott, Pat McNamara, Alyse Lahue and Elly Deutche) are on the front lines day-in and day-out, and are really connecting with the public. Heck, I'm from Philadelphia and they have turned me into one of their biggest supporters. If that's not an accomplishment, I don't know what is.
Other WPS teams really need to follow Chicago's lead. The Red Stars are not only listening to what the fans want, they are actually making it happen! Besides the webcasts, take a look at some other examples:
- Just today, GM Marcia McDermott was giving away her club box seats for this weekend's game to the first person who called the ticket line and mentioned her tweet. (You can follow her on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/mmcd21)
- Chicago offered fans a bus ride from Chicago to St. Louis for the first away game. (PBR included!)
- On Tuesday, I received an email with a "thank you" offer -$10 to bring a friend, no matter where you sit.
- The team has players like Lindsay Tarpley and Megan Rapinoe guest blogging for the Chicago Tribune.
- The Red Stars had Dollar Dog Night for petes sake. Does it get any better than that?! I think not!
Honestly, I could go on forever....
Other teams like FC Gold Pride, LA Sol, Washington Freedom and the Boston Breakers are slowly making their way up to Red Stars status. I just heard from Gold Pride last night and they've got some things in the works for future gameday webcasts.
On the flip side, Athletica and Sky Blue have really got to step it up. I'd like so much to get behind Sky Blue, since it is my local team, but they've got to get it going in the marketing department: Twitter is your friend -- use it. Develop some innovative gameday promotions and ticket packages. Maybe try some theme nights. I used to work for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and theme nights were always a hit. And lastly, please look beyond the East Brunswick Soccer Club to bring in your sales, especially when you've got Hoboken (where I used to live) and NYC at your fingertips. Do some happy hours like the Boston Breakers, get out in the community like Gold Pride, help create a fan club like the Freedom. At this point, just do something!
As for the Red Stars, you rock my world! Keep up the good work. Looking forward to visiting you all this summer for a game!

WNT Adds East Coast Games to Summer Schedule
Summer Schedule:
US vs. Japan -Saturday, May, 23 - Sandy, UT - 4pm MT
US vs. Canada - Wednesday, July 22 - Charleston, SC - 8pmET
Quick Recaps: WPS Sunday
Los Angeles Sol vs. FC Gold Pride (1-0)
Bay Area's Gold Pride took a trip down the coast to visit California rivals, LA Sol. FC Gold Pride was fired up, especially since Sol midfielder Aly Wagner was dissing its team name the week prior on Twitter!
Both teams battled their way through the first half, each tallying 6 shots (only 3 of 12 were actually on net) but things opened up for the Sol 2 minutes into the second half when Wagner chipped a ball over Gold Pride's backline and into the box. Marta was, of course, on the recieving end and took a quick shot on net, putting it past Gold Pride goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart. This gives Marta 3 goals so far this season, tying for the league goal leader spot with Boston Breakers Kelly Smith.
The LA Sol sit atop the league in first place, while the Gold Pride drop to 4th place.
Sky Blue FC vs. Chicago Red Stars (0-0)
Now this was one game I was really looking forward to watching. I've become a huge Red Stars fan over the last few weeks, despite the fact that I cover NY/NJ for OleOle.
The Red Stars were able to bring out almost 6,000 fans in the rainy, cold Chicago spring weather. My bet is, had the sun been shining, 7,500 people would've showed up. Eventhough the game ended in a 0-0 tie, I saw some great soccer. Chicago dominated the first half and I wish they could've continued that attacking energy throughout the 2nd half, but they let SBFC back in the game. Check my recap on OleOle.
Red Stars Players of Note:
Karen Carney was phenomenal. She made great runs and served some excellent balls into the attacking third. She is a playmaker, period. Megan Rapinoe deserves a shoutout, if not solely for her amazing bicycle kick in the first half. She is a great player. I thought there were a couple of balls she held onto too long or served too early, but ultimately she will prove to be quite an asset to the Stars. And lastly, Carli Lloyd ... you've picked up your game lady and are looking like the old Lloyd we know and love. Keep it up!

WPS Weekend Recap
The Washington Freedom, coming off a bye week, scored its first goal in WPS history during its home opener. In the first half, Chicago forward Lindsay Tarpley, with pure heart and hustle, scored her 2nd goal in league play -- after just 2 games. (Not to detract from Tarpley's goal, but I do think Freedom keeper Briana Scurry should have made the save. I think it might be time for Gabarra to put in KJ Spisak and see what happens.) Washington's goal came early in the 2nd half off a dangerous set piece served in the box by Sonia Bompastor. Teammate Becky Sauerbrunn was able to get a head on it and put it past Chicago keeper Caroline Jonsson. Amazing stat -- Washington outshot the Red Stars 26-8! I think that says something about Jonsson's play yesterday, no?! Watch the video highlights of the goals.
Of note: Red Stars player, Frida Ostberg was the first player in WPS history to receive a red card.
Sky Blue FC 1 - FC Gold Pride 1
With last night's tie Sky Blue FC’s record is now 0-1-1 while FC Gold Pride stands at 1-0-1. Though Sky Blue had over 6,000 fans at last week's home opener, only 2,735 came out last night. Luckily for those fans who did come out, they got to see a great game of soccer! Both teams came out strong with SBFC dominating possession, though not necessarily converting possession to opportunity. It was actually FC Gold Pride's Carrie Dew that scored first, off a corner kick from Tiffany Weimer. (I actually missed this goal because I was updating Twitter. That's one mistake I won't make again!) With only 15 minutes left in the game, I thought for sure SBFC was going to start the season with an 0-2 record, but sure enough, Heather O'Reilly came to the rescue and scored the equalizer off a pass from Sarah Walsh. With O'Reilly's former youth club, East Brunswick Soccer, in the house she certainly was last night's hometown hero.
Of note: US Women's National Team coach, Pia Sundhage, was also in the stands (a few rows behind me) scouting and cheering on her players from both teams.
Boston Breakers 2 - St. Louis Athletica 0
What is going on with Athletica? I haven't been able to watch any of their games yet, but for the life of me I can't understand why they can't put one in the net. They seem to have ample opportunities, but miss every single time.
Last night, Athletica faced the Boston Breakers at Boston's home opener in front of a crowd of approximately 4,800 people. The first half seemed to start off slow with both teams getting stuck in the midfield. However, the Breakers seemed to come alive in the 2nd half. Breakers stars Kelly Smith and Kristine Lily got a goal a piece (Smith even assisted on Lil's goal) to shut out Hope Solo and her teammates. Solo rarely gives up 3 goals in a year with the US WNT so why has she given up 3 in the last 2 games? So not only do they have a problem with their offense, they have a problem with their defense, too? Yikes!
Let's hope Athletica can turn it around, because I have them in the final four!!

Smith Writes DailyMail Column
Though the column talks about everything from Smith's experiences in the WUSA and WPS, and her thoughts on the upcoming match against St. Louis, I think my favorite part is : "There has been some debate about players updating their status during matches...Your mind isn't focused on the game or with your team-mates when you're on the phone or whatever, typing updates. You won't catch me doing that." It's always great when a pro player validates your opinion!
Other games this weekend are: Sky Blue FC vs FC Gold Pride (which I'll be attending) and the Chicago Red Stars vs Washington Freedom (airing live on FSC @6pmEST).

Recently, the FC Gold Pride team made BAWSI one of the FC Gold Pride Charities, its community-based nonprofit organization that looks to mentor young girls through participation in soccer-related events. Just last week, the Gold Pride visited Bowers Elementary School in Santa Clara, CA to talk about soccer, exercise, and health. I believe handing out free tickets to the opening day game was also in the agenda! Here are some pictures of the event (courtesy of BAWSI):

For more info, check out my blog on OleOle.
I'll post some pics from today's game tomorrow. (had Twitterberry and camera issues today)
FC Gold Pride 2, Boston Breakers 1
I only saw the last few minutes, but what I will say is I REALLY enjoy watching Kelly Smith. She is tough as nails, and when the game is on the line she does everything in her power to get her team back on top. Did anyone see that foul in the 2nd half where she was practically bear-hugging a Gold Pride player to prevent her from getting to the ball? Haha. Love it.
As for as Milbrett's last-minute, game-winning goal. People say it's about being in the right place at the right time. I agree, but if you can't finish, it doesn't matter when and where you are. Way to be Millie!

Spilger Seeing Green
Spilger who grew up in the suburbs of San Diego was selected as the 2nd draft pick (16th overall) by WPS's Chicago Red Stars. Spilger, who previously co-captained the Stanford University women's team and played internationally in Sweeden, earned her Masters degree in Construction Engineering Management and her Bachelors' in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
While attending the 2007 GreenBuild Expo in Chicago, Spilger was inspired by speaker Paul Hawken (an environmentalist, author and entrepeneur) to make the green movement "cool and sexy", and to unify all those who cared for the planet. Out of that desire, Spilger created GreenLaces, an organization that "supports earth-friendly causes and provides a solution for a better planet through a simple promise and a pair of green laces."
Spilger asks, through her organization, that everyone make one promise to the earth. GreenLaces asks you to imagine what the world would look like if everyone changed just one thing. Take for example Spilger's promise:
"I, Natalie Spilger, promise to never purchase a non-re-usable plastic water bottle, unless in an emergency situation." - GreenLaces.org
GreenLaces has already garnered support from WPS athletes like Brandi Chastain (who is also on the Board of Directors), Hope Solo and Heather O'Reilly. Spilger has also, just recently, been featured in Chicago Athlete as its 2009 Green Athlete of the Year.

WPS: Lets Get It Started
Chicago Red Stars
If this team works as hard as its star player, Lindsay Tarpley, the Red Stars will fair well in this league. Tarpley will have great support in her US WNT teammates Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd. Rapinoe, the 2008 West Coast Conference player of the year, has the potential to make big things happen offensively for the Red Stars. Lloyd, who will be the controlling force in the midfield, is a smart, skillfull player who has great vision on the pitch. Other players to watch out for are Brazilian forward Cristiane and Sweedish midfielder Frida Ostberg. This is a great team with a dynamic leader in coach Emma Hayes. They also get my vote for the most "connected" team.
Los Angeles Sol
I'd hate to be the one to tell Marta that she is looking at a repeat of the '08 Olympics, but I think she's going to see silver again this year with WPS. She may be the world's best female soccer player, but she can't do it all. Don't get me wrong, Sol is solid. With players like Shannon Boxx, Aly Wagner, Stephanie Cox, Camille Abily and Han Duan, the team will go far. Coach Abner Rodgers plays a possession-focused game and that is something the US WNT players on the team understand from the get-go.
Sky Blue FC
Christie Rampone brings leadership and stability. Heather O'Reilly brings speed and a brilliant right foot. And Natasha Kai, well, she's bringing her spunk and (hopefully) a lot of goals. Coach Ian Sawyers has called this team a melting pot, though I think most teams in WPS are. With 6 international players on its 21-person roster (and a whole lot of W-League stars), SBFC is going to bring exciting soccer to its fans week after week. Sawyers, who was WUSA's coach of the year in 2001, led the San Jose CyberRays to a championship in its inaugural season and I think he'll make a good run for the championship this year with Sky Blue.
St. Louis Athletica
Ok, so his English may not be that great, but Athletica coach Jorge Barcellos sure knows his soccer. Barcellos, the former Brazilian Women's National Team coach, will be bringing his fast flowing, attacking style of play to the WPS. He really values technique and understands the importance of strength and physicality in the modern game. He handpicked a team filled with skill and speed. Oh, did I mention he also snagged the world's best goalkeeper, too? With US WNT players Lori Chalupny and Hope Solo, coupled with 2-time MAC Herman Trophy winner Kerri Hanks, and Brazilian midfielder Daniella, this team is stacked.
Boston Breakers
One name -- DiCicco. Now, this is a coach who knows how to field a team. He's got Kristine Lily. He's got Kelly Smith and Alex Scott. He's got A-Rod. If that wasn't enough, he also has former National Team players Angela Hucles and Heather Mitts. Oh, I'm not done yet. Have I mentioned WUSA veterans Kristen Luckenbill and Nancy Augustyniak Goffi? Or how about Canadian forward Christine Latham? This team is deep with a capital D.
Washington Freedom
Luckily for Coach Jim Gabarra, the Freedom got a head start on the competition. When the WUSA folded in 2003, Gabarra and the Washington Freedom continued on as a W-League team. Come draft-time for the WPS, Gabarra was able to keep 12 players from his W-league team for his WPS roster. Talk about an advantage! US star Abby Wambach and Australian foward Lisa De Vanna will anchor the Freedom offense while US WNT player Cat Whitehill will bring her extensive experience to the back line.
FC Gold Pride
Fact: "Only a small percentage of the world’s wines get noticeably better with age, but those that do are worth the wait." I think the same of soccer players. At 40 and 36, Brandi Chastain and Tifeny Milbrett will prove to be worth our wait. We haven't seen much of them in the past few years, but now that they are back I'm sure we'll see some new tricks. FC Gold Pride also has former US WNT denfensive midfielder Leslie Osborne. Osborne has been recovering from her 2008 ankle and knee surgeries and doesn't feel quite at the top of her game yet, but is confident it will come back quickly. Other players of note are former UCLA midfielder and MAC Herman Trophy finalist Tina DiMartino, and Brazilian teammates Formiga, Adriane and Erika.
This WPS season is going to be full of top-flight soccer and I, for one, am ready for it to get started!

The Old Ladies Make Gold Pride Roster
Millie, who was a member of the '96 gold medal team, also played for the WUSA's New York Power. When the WUSA folded, she began playing in Sweeden and more recently for the Vancouver Whitecaps Women. Milbrett is one of the most explosive players this game has ever seen--you never know what to expect. One second she's at midfield, the next, she's put one in the back of the net and you're left wondering what happened in between.

Twitter at WPS Inaugural Game
I have always been the biggest advocate for WPS but this decision is wrong.
I really hope, for the league's sake, Twitter stays off the field after March 29.
Twitter Timeout
For those of you who don't really understand Twitter, think of it as text messages via the internet. Instead of sending an update of what you're doing to one person, you can send it out to a group of people who have signed up to "follow" you.
Well, I of course added WPS and all of its teams immediately. To my surprise, WPS posed the following question last night:
"WPS is considering having some players tweet during games this season from the sidelines...under discussion at the league level. Thoughts?"
I was floored when I saw it. I actually had to read it a few times to make sure I had read it correctly. I couldn't understand how this was even being considered.
Imagine tuning into a Lakers game and watching Kobe Bryant twittering away on his phone during a timeout. Imagine Lance Armstrong pulling off on the side of the road to update his fans on his Tour de France ride. It's absurd to think of that happening with those professional athletes, so why would it be okay for our players?
Women's Professional Soccer, whether they realize it or not, is in the struggle of its life to prove to the country that they are in fact a viable professional league. Though they will never be the NFL or NBA, they need to maintain the same level of play and professionalism.
Twitter, if required of players during games, could change the whole dynamic of the game.
As a fan, I'd absolutely love to hear from WPS players on Twitter, but I really don't think gametime is the right time. The WPS is the highest level of women's professional soccer in North America. In order to be the best league of women's soccer in the world, you focus on soccer first, promotion second. Once you develop talent and exciting soccer, the rest will come.
I guess my question is, what is WPS's objective for having players tweet during games? As a fan, if I can't be at the game or watch on TV, I only care about the score. Though it'd be interesting to hear what Aly Wagner or Christie Shaner is feeling while on the sideline, I care more that she's focused on the game and prepared to play.
Think about this...You're the coach. There's 10 minutes left in a game. The score is tied 0-0. Your forward has no legs left. You've got a strong player who could come off the bench and possibly put one in the back of the net. You look back to her and she's on her phone crafting the perfect tweet. Has she even been paying attention? Did she even see the last play? Did she notice that new players are on the field for her opponent?
If the league wants to send out Twitter updates during the game, have a social media/marketing intern do it. If players want to twitter on the bus ride to/from the game, after practice, or on their free time I am all for it. But please, don't ask the players to compromise the integrity of the game for league promotion.
WPS is definitley setting a precedent when it comes to social media marketing in professional sports (which I love), but having players tweet during games is too much. Stop while you're ahead.

Philly 2010
Today, the WPS board of govenors approved Philly as its eighth franchise team. The force that has been leading the women's effort in Philadelphia is none other than Matthew Driver. Driver, the CEO of Team Dynamics LLC and the WPSL Philadelphia Liberty has also been working closely with the 2010 MLS Philadelphia expansion team to create an innovative partnership between teams.
The women’s team is expected to play at the 18,500-seat soccer stadium being built for the MLS franchise in Chester, Pa., outside of Philadelphia.
As a native Philadelphian, I can't even begin to tell you how exciting it is to have a women's pro team back in the city. The last team, the Philadelphia Charge played at Villanova University Stadium and seemed to be right in the middle of the pack when it came to attendance. Since then, I think the excitement for the sport has only grown in the area, and to piggyback on MLS fans...things are lookin' good for WPS Philly.
Who knows, maybe I'll come out of my 10 year retirement and tryout. Hmmm...

What's In A Name..
Los Angeles Sol: Sol is the Latin translation for Sun and the modern word for 'Sun' in the Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Icelandic, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish languages. Los Angeles is renowned for its sunny climate and rich heritage. Perfect choice, no?
Boston Breakers: Did you know 'Boston Breakers' was the name of Boston's 1983 USFL team? The USFL Breakers had originally hoped to play at Harvard Stadium (home to our current Boston WPS team). However, the USFL Breakers actually wound up playing at Boston University's Nickerson Field (where the Boston Breakers of WUSA used to play). Talk about a coincidence?
FC Gold Pride: 'Gold' according to the owners refers to the Bay Area -- their "gold standard" and of course the "Golden State". The lioness in the logo demonstrates the characteristics of strength, teamwork, and skill -- They are the providers of the pride. I was a fan of "Aftershocks" but hey, we can't win 'em all.
Chicago Red Stars: The team name is in honor of the four red stars on Chicago's flag. A fifth star was added to the Red Stars' logo to represent Chicago's new women's team. Fun fact: In its public naming contest, the Chicago Wind came in second place.
St. Louis Athletica: Inspired by St. Joan of Arc, the Athletica crest features the silhouette of a woman atop her horse hoisting an "STL" flag overhead. Below the crest, a SAINT LOUIS ATHLETICA banner is flanked by two fleurs-de-lis — a nod to St. Louis as an 18th Century French settlement. The word "Athletica," is derived from the adjective "athletic," with the "a" denoting the newly-created noun as feminine, a common practice in many foreign languages.
Washington Freedom: C'mon people. You're in Washington. If you can't figure it out, I sure can't help ya. But love the new logo with the soccer ball shaped Capitol Building. Drastic improvement from the Freedom's WUSA logo, no? If anyone knows what the old image was (other than scary) let me know!
Sky Blue FC: SBFC chose to adopt the use of the traditional 'FC' slang - the shortened version of "Football Club" in many parts of the world. The use of FC reflects Sky Blue's European ties with company owners Thomas Hofstetter and Francesco Prandoni originally from Germany and Italy. Plus, add a head coach hailing from England, it's a wrap. The Sky Blue logo features a bird - the swift - flying through the sky.
Now that you know what's behind the names and images of our current WPS teams, how bout some suggestions for our future teams...
What do you think Philly and Atlanta should be called?
Milly Released?
(For Gold's sake, let's hope the rumor is wrong!)
Player Spotlight: Kelly Smith
Growing up in Watford, England, Smith surrounded herself with soccer. At the age of 16, she became a member of the English National Team. Earning 74 caps and 30 goals, she has been a constant stronghold in the team's offense.
After Smith's freshman year of college in England, she transferred to Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. While at SHU, playing under head coach Betty Ann Kempf, Smith became the first athlete in any sport to win the Big East Conference's Offensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year awards...in the same year. The following two seasons, Smith took home Offensive Player honors yet again, and was the leading scorer among all NCAA Division 1 teams. Smith became the first athlete (in a sport other than basketball) to have her number retired for the Pirates.
In 2000, Smith was drafted by the WUSA's Philadelphia Charge where she teamed up with current WPS players, Cat Whitehill and Heather Mitts. Due to several injuries, Smith only played one full season with the Charge though she was on its roster from 2000-2003. Smith then transitioned to New Jersey's W-League team, where again she was sidelined by injury.
In 2004, Smith left the States and headed back across the pond to play for Arsenal Ladies. Again, Smith was injured, therefore, delaying her start. In 2005, she returned to the pitch, and has since scored 103 goals in 114 appearances for Arsenal Ladies. In 2006 and 2008, Smith was a top five finalist for the FIFA Women's World Player award ( 2006 honors went to Mia Hamm, 2008 honors went to Marta). This March, Smith, and teammate Alex Scott played their last Arsenal game before leaving to join the Boston Breakers in preseason training camp.
Good luck Kelly! I'd say break a leg, but with you it may be just a bit too literal. ;-)

She's Over It?
Meza's response, "It's all right, I'm already over it."
Really??!!
I've got to be honest, though I've read other positive comments from Meza regarding her experiences with the WPS preseason, the "I'm already over it," comment really rubbed me the wrong way.
"You're over it"? Well that was quick.
I think the comment begs to ask the question of whether or not she really wanted it that bad in the first place.
Coach Albertin Montoya, who was saddened to let her go, is actually going to bat for Meza by speaking with other teams in the league about their potential needs for a midfielder. The question is, would Meza go to bat for herself? Does she really want to fight for this dream of hers? Or is she just "over it"?
In reading about Meza's story, I of course can't help but feel for her. She came from a tough upbringing (that's an understatement!) and has made something of herself. She is a role model and shows everyone that you alone control your future. However I wonder, is Meza really passionate about playing professional soccer or is she just looking for something more than life as she knows it now?
"I need to get something out of this," she said to SJ Mercury News. "If things don't work out, I am going to look for other doors."
I am not trying to downplay any of her accomplishments. I'm sure many will think I am. I just have never gotten the feeling, since the first word of Meza hit the media, that soccer was her passion. To play at the professsional level, I think it has to be. It's not something you just walk into lighlty and do on your free time. You do it because you can't imagine doing anything else. You do it because for you...soccer is life.
Don't get me wrong, I wish the best for Meza and hope that I have misunderstood her comments. If I have, I apologize. No matter what, I hope she continues to fight for her dream...whatever it may be.
